CofC in British Virgin Islands: Biology (Summer)

Get introduced to the organismal biology, ecology, and conservation of the Caribbean coral reef ecosystem in the British Virgin Islands. On this program the emphasis is placed on field methods and labs, including SCUBA-based field experiments that provide hands-on experience and contribute to ongoing research projects. The program is conducted aboard an 80 foot Burger yacht that will serve as our new teaching and research platform. Each day the class sails to a new island in the archipelago to investigate and explore new habitats, and receive practical training in the nautical sciences and SCUBA that prepare them to be a competent member of a research crew or field team. CofC in British Virgin Islands: Geology (Summer)

Earn CofC credit living on the 80 foot Burger Research Vessel Manta where you will navigate through the islands, channels, and highly varied geological conditions of the US and British Virgin Islands. In this unique experience you will study the environmental stresses on highly populated islands, starkly contrasted to the unpopulated islands, and the diverse differences in the areas apparent. From every rock and beach type, to desalinization plants and wind farms, you will be exposed and experience a wide variety of landscapes and activities. The resiliency of the areas to sea level rise, hurricanes, and water resources provides an excellent backdrop for the foci of the course. CofC in Cambodia and Vietnam: Psychology (Summer)

This is an amazing, action-packed program! Students take two courses (for PSYC or ENVT credit) examining the psychological, political, and environmental after-effects of periods of violence, turmoil, and conflict. You will witness first-hand the socio-cultural and environmental footprints left behind by violence and sustained poverty in developing countries. Through this program you will explore the pros and cons of international intervention and humanitarian aid, meeting and volunteering with organizations working to improve social, political, and environmental conditions (for both humans and other living species – including elephants!) on the ground. CofC in Chiavari, Italy: Italian Literature in Translation (Summer)

This summer study Italian poetry for 3 weeks in the very hospitable town of Chiavari, Italy and explore the Liguria landscape and identity through Montale’s poems. We will take field trips all over Liguria, and the historically important seaport of Genova, where Columbus lived, Marco Polo was jailed, Garibaldi launched his attempt to unify Italy, and where the largest Aquarium in Europe is located next to Eat Italy. CofC in Costa Rica: Business (Summer)

TRAN 360 will introduce students to the cultural, legal, and business environments in Costa Rica. The course will focus on the practical issues that a foreigner will encounter in conducting in international venues, focusing on managing in a developing or transition economy in a third world country, and combing the academic research and skills with the experience of management practitioners. SCIM 360 will allow students to understand the importance of Costa Rican logistics and the importance of Supply Chain Management in the development of Central American countries. Students will also be able to suggest a set of port performance indicators in Costa Rica that measure lean port performance and sustain the subsequent development of agile ports. CofC in Costa Rica: Teacher Education (Summer)

This study abroad program will focus on providing students an opportunity to understand the experience of international education, both in a bilingual school and in a traditional public school in the country of Costa Rica. The bilingual school will give the students a chance to see a classroom in their own subject area/grade level in an international setting while the traditional public school will give students the chance to be part of an ESL classroom in a foreign context. Students will strengthen their cultural competencies by working with a group of international students with different cultural backgrounds and reflect on the differences between the education system in a country like Costa Rica and the United States to see both the strengths and weaknesses of both systems. Study this summer on site in the United Kingdom in London at the Foundation for International Education. Both courses will focus on the historical and contemporary relationship between Europe, the European Union, and Great Britain. You will explore “Brexit” as a centerpiece of the program and major topics such as immigration, London as a global finance capital, environmental policy and sustainability, and the British experience during the two great world wars. Spend 3-weeks studying genetics and health at the University of Tartu in Tartu, Estonia. Estonia is among the few nations in the world that have developed National Personalized Medicine programs that aim to collect genetic data and medical history information from a large number of its citizens. During this program you will study the basic and cutting edge research in human genetics and be introduced to the multitude of spaces in which genetics is playing a role. This program includes multiple visits that directly relate to what you will be studying along with cultural activities and visits in and around Estonia. CofC in Florence: Psychology (Summer)

Live like a local and study family life and child welfare in Florence, Italy for an entire month exploring the rich history of Tuscany. There will be integrated excursions within Florence including a guided experience in the Ospedale Degli Innocenti (Hospital of the Innocents). Due to the crisis of hundreds of abandoned and orphaned babies in the 1400’s, the first orphanage, Ospedale Degli Innocenti, was built and cared for over 375,000 children over five centuries and continues to advocate children worldwide today. It is also a headquarters for UNICEF and an educational center dedicated to child welfare. Students will experience the rich history of art, music, and religion through experiences in some of the world’s finest museums and oldest and most beautiful churches. A 3-day, 2-night trip to Rome is also included along with guided tours of all the major historic landmarks including the Colosseum and Pantheon. CofC in Germany and Austria: Communication (Summer)

Spend July earning CofC communication credit while exploring southern Germany and Northern Austria. Through our experiences traveling and interactions with others, we will discuss topics like nonverbal communication, assumptions, culture shock, family communication, conflict, self-efficacy, uncertainty reduction, politeness theory, stereotypes, small group communication, including others. This program will be a combination of homestays, hostels, hikes, conversations with new individuals and other ways for us to interact with the people and outdoor highlights around us in the different cities. The two courses (you can opt to register for one or both) will focus on intercultural (COMM 336) and interpersonal (COMM 215) communication. CofC in Iceland: Hospitality and Tourism Management (Summer)

Destination marketing organizations (DMOs) play a critical role in marketing and developing a tourism destination. This course requires active and creative participation in the marketing and development of tourism products and services in an international destination. During this international course, students travel to various regions of the country, meet with various DMOs leaders responsible for promoting specific regions of Iceland, participate in tourism activities with leading tourism operators, and engage in tourism development and marketing case studies. Throughout the program, students explore several distinct tourism regions of Iceland. Because Iceland is a global adventure tourism destination, this course includes multiple active outdoor recreational learning experiences and excursions. CofC in Ireland: Anthropology (Summer)

ANTH 352 will allow students to spend time in Strokestown and Skibbereen, two places that are of great historical importance because of the Great Irish Famine of 1845-1852. Students will examine this event, especially the oral and folk traditions on pre- and post-Famine Ireland and the legacy of the Great Famine. ANTH 329 will provide students with opportunities to study the Peoples of Ireland from ancient to contemporary times. Topics such as Ireland’s archeological background, its ancient Celtic/ Christian landscape, its flora and fauna, its foodways, its music, song and dance, its sports, and its types of rural employment will all be discussed. Honors students can live and study for 4-weeks in Lisbon, the capital city of Portugal. Choose from two course opportunities (or both) including an Advanced Special Topics course, HONS 390: Evidence-Based Medicine (three-credits) and a zero-credit (no tuition) Honors Immersed research opportunity focused on evaluating how the built environment supports active living within Lisbon. Instruction will be tailored to focus on specific healthcare issues, relevant public health policy, and unique city infrastructure within Lisbon. Not only will this program include guest lectures from Portuguese professors, national, and local government agencies but we will also participate in co-curricular excursions like a biking tour and a cooking class, as well as a day trip to a nearby historic palace and gardens. CofC in Panama and Costa Rica: Biology (Summer)

This combined lecture/lab course in Ecology will take place at a biological field station in Panama, with a short time also in Costa Rica. The lecture portion of the course will focus on fundamental ecological concepts and terminology, whereas the lab will specifically emphasize tropical ecology. The format of the lab consists of natural history labs, independent research, and class field experiments. A wide variety of habitats will be examined including coral reefs, mangroves, seagrass meadows, rocky shores, wet and dry caves, tropical rainforest, and cloud forest. Students will also gain exposure to diverse local cultures and should be prepared for physical activity incl. snorkeling, hiking, caving, tree climbing, swimming, and rafting. The best way to learn a language is to be fully immersed in it. Spend the extended summer earning CofC credit while taking language and culture classes in Trujillo, Spain. A thriving center of tourism with a rich historical past, Trujillo is the place of origin of many conquistadors, including the Pizarros. The College of Charleston fall semester program offer students opportunity to study with faculty from CofC while abroad in Trujillo, Spain. Students are immersed in Spanish language and culture through living with experienced host families.
